Born in 1959 in the Dordogne and a graduate of the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts, Daniel Castan worked as a graphic designer before devoting himself to painting. From his travels to New York and Hong Kong he keeps a fascination for urban worlds and outsized perspectives, which he recomposes with a knife in fast-drying alkyd oil, heightened with thick layers of gloss varnish. His painting, instinctive, tends towards an abstract, pared-down representation where only light matters.
